Carlos A’s Wish – 2013, San Antonio
Carlos is an exceptional little boy with the biggest smile and an even bigger sense of humor. He is 7 years old. Carlos has leg braces that enable him to get around pretty good but he does require the use of a wheelchair when he is getting tired or does a lot of walking. Carlos has a twin sister, Karla, and a sister, Jenesis, that is 8 years old. He lives with his sisters, his grandmother, Juana, and a full time care giver.
The very first time we visited Carlos he told us several jokes and he played pranks on us. The first joke Carlos told us was “Why did the cookie go the hospital? Because he felt crummy!” Carlos’ pranks, and jokes continued with each visit and we were all captivated by his smile and infectious laugh.
Our team had the honor of making Carlos’ wish come to life with a trip to Disney World. To prepare Carlos and his family for their trip we held a pre-sendoff party at the Boy Scouts of America Clubhouse off of Military Drive. The theme for Carlos’ celebration was the Lion King complete with a Lion King cake and decorations. Carlos’ great grandparents attended as did many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Carlos had a surprise guest as well, his former care taker/nurse joined in the celebration. Carlos was beaming with excitement the entire time. We served soup (Carlos’ favorite food), sandwiches, chips, ice tea/lemonade, and cake. We presented the family with several gifts from our many Wish Donors:
- AT&T Nor-Cal Market ASUS VivoTab RT Windows Tablet
- Radio Shack – Canon Powershot S11o Digital Camera
- Jesse Salas – Vacation Village Condo
- Build-A-Bear – Bear
On Sunday, November 24, Carlos and his family began their trip with a ride in very long white Hummer limousine! The family was very excited and loved their 1st class ride to the airport.
Coco, Jessica, and Jennifer (limo sponsor) met the family at their home to help them load up before the family got into the limo.
At the airport the family was greeted by Willy and Kym to help complete the check-in process. We were helped by a fantastic Delta Airlines employee who made check-in a breeze. This Delta Airlines employee took it one step further and gained approval from his manager to waive the luggage fee costs for the trip out and the return flight. Everyone at the San Antonio Airport was very helpful to us and the family.
When the family arrived in Orlando they were greeted by the AT&T Pioneers Club! Glenda and team out did themselves with gifts! The kids received Mickey and Minnie Ears, other fun Disney Gifts and treats/snacks. But wait…there’s more…The Pioneers gave the family $100 of spending money too!
The AT&T Pioneers Club escorted the family to their condo and ensured they were comfortable before leaving. Glenda checked in with the family during their stay and offered her assistance if necessary.
Day one at the park was a day filled with wonder and excitement for Carlos and his sisters. Carlos was wide eyed trying to take everything in and not miss anything! Juana said Carlos never stopped smiling!
Carlos caught the attention of Woody, Toy Story, and was mesmerized by Woody! He strolled in the parade with Woody and danced with him. Juana said Carlos received the VIP treatment everywhere they went and he loved every minute of it. Carlos was singled out various times by park characters, with many hugs and high fives.
When the family arrived back in San Antonio they were smiling but exhausted! The family enjoyed a ride home in a white Hummer limousine. Juana expressed her gratitude repeatedly and said Carlos will remember this experience for the rest of his life.
Every time we visited with Carlos we were reminded of what is really important and how insignificant some of the things we lose sleep over really are. Carlos is always smiling, laughing and joyful. This also speaks to the warm and loving environment his grandmother has created.
